It is proposed that the northern warrior Berserker tradition originated from hunting magic. Three main animal cults appeared: the bear, the wolf, & the wild boar. In battle, the berserkers were subject to fits of frenzy. They would howl like wild beasts, foam at the mouth, & gnaw the rims of their shields. During these fits, they were supposedly immune to steel & fire, & made great havoc in the ranks of the enemy. To "go berserk" was to "hamask", which translates to “change form.” Some scholars interpreted that the warriors were literally able to shapeshift into an animal’s form.
